THE Berlfein PRIZE

THREE $500 PRIZES

DEADLINE: APRIL 30

2025 NONFICTION WRITING CONTEST

The Berlfein Prize is an annual writing award of $500 given to three undergraduate students who have produced an outstanding piece of nonfiction writing. The prize was established by the family of Baruch alumnus Harold "Hal" Mattes Berlfein ('39) and honors his wish to encourage excellent writing at Baruch College.

All nonfiction work submitted by current undergraduate students for publication this academic year before April 30, 2025 will be considered for a prize. We welcome entrants to submit up to four papers of all themes, topics, lengths, and forms, including those written for courses.

The judges will select three winners.

The three winners will each receive:

  • $500

  • publication on the REFRACT website

  • an invitation to read an excerpt from their prize-winning essay at the annual End-of-Year Celebration hosted by the Department of English

Please send all submissions to refractmagazine@gmail.com by 11:59 p.m., April 30, 2025.
