About Shefa:
The Shefa School is a Jewish community day school in Manhattan serving students in grades K-8 who benefit from a specialized educational environment in order to develop their strengths while addressing their learning challenges. We specifically serve students with language-based learning disabilities who have not yet reached their potential levels of success in traditional classroom settings. Shefa is a pluralistic community school, serving families across the range of Jewish involvement and observance. At Shefa, we believe that differences are a source of strength and that we are all enriched by the diversity of perspectives.
About the Position:
The Shefa Teacher Residency is a groundbreaking program that recruits and trains individuals to become exceptional teachers by providing an intensive and supportive school-based teacher training program. Over the residency year, teacher residents train in a classroom with a mentor teacher and take on increasing responsibility for teaching while gaining support through on-site professional development, workshops, and coaching. Residents receive training in a variety of programs including Responsive Classroom, PAF Reading Program, and Multisensory Math. At the end of the year, teacher residents are eligible candidates to apply for The Shefa Teacher Fellowship Program or for a position as an assistant teacher at Shefa.
Key Responsibilities:
Teacher residents are responsible for supporting students in the classroom in a variety of subject areas alongside lead teachers. In addition to supporting the curriculum development and delivery of instruction, teacher residents will participate in assessing student learning, managing classroom routines and behavior, building relationships and communicating regularly with families, and collaborating with other faculty. Residents will be responsible for a variety of duties throughout the school day, and will participate in weekly Residents Cohort Meetings as well as one-week training over the summer.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree and experience working with children. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a Jewish setting and experience working with children with language-based learning disabilities.
