Afterschool Counselor for Stephanie Wise Free Synagogue
Position Title: Afterschool Counselor for Religious School (3 – 4 openings)
Position Description:
The Religious School at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue is building a team to support its afterschool
transitional program. We invite local applicants to join our team as Afterschool Counselors. Afterschool
Counselors will come in-person to Stephen Wise Free Synagogue on the Upper West Side each Monday
at 2:30pm and assist with the logistics and safety operations of our school drop-off program, overseeing
the children from when they are dropped off at staggered times until Religious School begins at 4pm.
The ideal candidates for this role (3 – 4 openings) are current university students, recent graduates, and
early professionals with availability on Monday afternoons. Candidates should enjoy spending time with
children ages 5-10 and can handle a busy room with professionalism and calm. Previous experience as a
camp counselor, teacher’s aide, youth group staff, or similar is a big plus. Familiarity with Jewish
education and the Jewish community is preferred, but not required.
Schedule:
Monday’s, 2:30pm to 4pm, in-person at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue (30 West 68th Street), September
2024 – May 2025. The first day of school will be Monday, September 16, but some light preparation and
onboarding must be completed before that date.
Compensation:
The Afterschool Counselor compensation will start at $70 for each 90-minute time block Monday, with
flexibility up to $80 for candidates highly experienced with childcare. Light preparation and onboarding
work may be assigned to complete remotely, which will be compensated at $30/hour.

Additional Notes:
